The House of the Ear

describing the most enigmatic of the cults of the Great Place

Worships the God in the aspect of the God of Justice. In this aspect the God is seen as meticulously painstaking and scrupulously honest. This cult is fairly austere and puritanical, at least by the standards of the Place. It is very highly regarded, but not greatly liked. The Ear performs the functions of an investigating magistracy, listening to complaints, hearing arguments, and investigating doubtful happenings. It also runs a internal intelligence - spy - network.

The Ear never gives a judgment or opinion of anything, but passes objective accounts of everything which comes to its attention both to the House of the Mouth, with which it co-operates closely, and the High Place.

The observance of the cult of the Ear is silent. Devotees of the cult gather together and sit or stand in silence for long periods, listening for the voice of the God, who is held to speak to everyone, but very softly. These meetings are open to anyone; they are not, however very popular. Unlike the other Houses, the Ear claims not to be heirarchic, but egalitarian. Consequently, priests of the Ear have titles which relate to their task rather than their rank. In practice, however, there is a strong practice of deference to age and experience, which in effect amounts to a hierarchy.

Where religious meetings of the cult of the Ear take place indoors, very plain rooms are chosen so as not to distract the devotees from listening.

Devotees of the Ear tend to wear rather tatty clothes, with no special vestments being used. Priests wear no special mark, and indeed the cult makes no distinction between the priesthood and the laity, except that the priesthood carry out the civic functions of the cult.

Again, the power of the Ear is feared by other Houses, although some feel that the cult of disinterest will prevent this house from becoming dangerously ambitious.

Death and Funerary Rites
The Ear and its followers depend on the funerary rites of the Cunt, like most other people.
