The House of the Mouth

describing one of the less interesting cults of the Great Place

Worships the God in the aspect of God of Wisdom. In this aspect the God is all knowing, omniscient. The House of the Mouth give judgments on matters brought to the attention of the House of the Ear, and from time to time makes pronouncements of the will of God. It also has primary responsibility for the education of children. Consequently, it is enormously powerful, although neither rich nor especially popular. It is jealously watched by other ambitious houses, notably the Eye.

The observance of the Mouth consists recitals of sayings of the God. The officiating priest asks the congregation what the god said on this or that minor point in this or that year going back centuries, and the congregation is expected to recite back, word perfect, exactly what was said. Both questions and answers are delivered in a sing-song monotone. Generally, these services are relatively easy, with questions on well known texts. In special services, however, the questions may be far more wide ranging, and devotees compete to be able to recite correctly the most obscure dicta.

Priests of the mouth wear ornate costumes in rich colours, and services of the cult are very grand. They take place in richly decorated halls. Texts framed in elaborate costly mountings are venerated.

Taynuic visits the Hous of the Mouth.
