The Myth of the God Incarnate

The Rim

describing the ring of mountains which protects the Great Place of the God Incarnate from the Barbarian Tribes of the steppe

The rim is a continuous circle of mountains, except where breached by the sea. The outer slopes are exceedingly precipitous, the inner slopes much more gradual. Only three practical passes cross the rim, one each in the eastern, northern, and western sectors, but not geometrically arranged. Passage across the rim is effectively impossible in winter because of deep snow. In summer, the upper slopes are only passable at night because of the activities of the dragons (q.v.) during the day. Consequently, the passes are provided with regularly spaced fortified hostels where travelers can rest during the day. These hostels are provided jointly by the Houses of the Hand and the Foot (q.v.)
