Early Employment

I left school at 16 and worked variously as a lithographer, labourer, farm hand, dustbin man, pottery manager and trawler deckhand before entering the School of Independent Studies at Lancaster University in 1981 at the age of 26. While at Lancaster I studied the influence of social structure on the experience of conflict in small groups; additionally, I undertook an advanced course in mathematical logic.
