A Project of Care in Action NSF (Scotland)

August 1993 - November 1995

Care in Action NSF is a charity concerned with the well being of people suffering from schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. The charity has for some years run projects to provide people suffering, or recovering from mental illness with training and work experience, initially in intellectually undemanding skills. It had found that, for many such people, undemanding work was inappropriate -- mental illness is no respecter of intellect. Consequently it planned a software development workshop, and invited me to develop this.

In eight months, starting with a wholly untrained team all suffering either from schizophrenia or clinical depression, we brought in our first commercial application -- a client/server database with a graphical front end, and object oriented adaptive user interface, and a normalised relational back end, running on a UnixWare hosted NetWare system with Microsoft Windows 3.1 as the client operating environment -- on time. We also sold it. I'm quite pleased with this as an achievement.
