Involvement in Alvey DHSS Large Demonstrator Project

July 1985 - November 1987

Savant Fellow in Computing, University of Lancaster

November 1987 - November 1988

On graduating from Lancaster University, I was invited by my logic tutor, Peter Mott - now with the Department of Philosophy at Leeds University - to join him as his research associate on the Alvey DHSS Large Demonstrator Project. While working on this project we laid the foundations of Elicitation by Exception, the core of The KnAcq methodology, and I built the first implementation of the knowledge interpreter for exception structures. This work was published as 'A Graphical Inference Mechanism'. In November of 1987 I undertook a one year research fellowship with the University of Lancaster. During this year I chaired the Graphical Explanation sessions of the Alvey Workshop on Explanation.
